    More Information

John o’ Groats 3.8 miles. Idyllically positioned in a glorious remote location overlooking the marvellous waters of Freswick Bay, in the peaceful hamlet of Freswick, rests this remarkable Grade A listed ancient tower house, Freswick Castle. Built upon the foundations of a 12th century Viking settlement and boasting original period featurers, Freswick Castle is steeped in fascinating history, making the perfect base for a group of friends or family looking to explore the delights of this extraordinary region. Journey along the track road where you’ll be greeted by a spacious off-road parking area nestled at the foot of this impressive holiday home; unload your belongings and marvel at the stunning sea views in front of you before climbing the stone steps to begin your staycation. Step through the studded castle door and into the main hall, traditionally decorated with exposed stonework and a warming open fire, providing a delightful introduction to the period décor that runs throughout the entirety of this historic home. Follow the stone spiral staircase, peppered with olde-worlde charm, to the first floor, where you’ll find the open-plan living space, home to a fully-equipped kitchen, dining table and a snug seating area; here you can look forward to gathering together with your loved ones to indulge in a hearty meal, or a moment of peace with a good book, gently enveloped in the warmth of the open fire. A second sitting room is settled across the way, ideal for little ones to enjoy a movie marathon together whilst the grownups catch up over a crisp glass of wine with a seat in the third and final sitting room, resting in the ground floor. In the warmer months, carry your conversation outdoors where you can enjoy a sociable seat in the enclosed garden, backed by the tranquil sounds of the waves washing up on the shores nearby; with no light pollution, the spectacular night skies provide a truly lovely spot to gaze at the canopy of stars above. For a truly unique experience, the lower ground floor hosts a hidden chapel and cavernous party room in the oldest part of the castle, where guests, if brave enough, can throw a spooky celebration, whatever the weather. When the day draws to a close, guests are spoilt for choice between six well-presented bedrooms, with a sumptuous double nestled alongside a bathroom on the first-floor. Climbing the spiral staircase to the second floor you’ll discover three further double bedrooms, each with access to their own en-suite, a twin room, perfect for little ones, and a family room, home to both a double and a single bed, offering flexible sleeping arrangements for children, family or friends sharing. Servicing the property is a ground-floor wet room, ideal for guests with limited mobility, as well as two cloakrooms, each positioned on different floors for your convenience. Take advantage of your coastal position and explore the rugged coastline of Freswick Bay, renowned as a haven for wildlife; be sure to keep your eyes peeled for seals in the bay, otters in the burn, or a remarkable selection of sea birds decorating the skyline above. Jump in the car and journey to the nearby village of John o’ Groates, famed as the most north-eastern tip of Great Britain, where a photograph with the iconic signpost is obligatory whilst you’re in the area. Here you’ll find all of your local amenities to assist with your self-catering needs, including a handful of delicious eateries alongside a well-stocked convenience store; savour fresh fish and chips as you watch the world go by at the harbour, or sample the local goods with a tour of John o’ Groats Brewery. Be sure to pack your walking boots and embark on a two-footed adventure along the John o’Groats Trail toward the bustling city of Inverness, stretching 147 miles of coastal paths and cliff tops, and framing some of the best views of the Scottish Highlands. For a truly unique experience, whisk your loved ones away on an unforgettable escape to Freswick Castle. EPC Rating: Band F
