We look forward to welcoming our guests to Chapel Cottage, which we have lovingly developed over the past fifty years after we bought as a derelict “building”. It is now a valuable and inviting no-smoking and shoes-off-at-the-door cottage!

The Hamlet, Croasdale, is in a very quiet, remote part of the NW Lake District National Park, with no shops, clubs, or restaurants, but with two pubs and a community cafe 2 miles away – a nice walk! Apart from our friends in the hamlet, your other neighbours will be sheep, fells and our local lake, Ennerdale Water! The towns of Whitehaven, Workington and Cockermouth are within ten miles.

We hope you will enjoy your stay and would let us know how we can improve Chapel Cottage.

    Trustees of the family Trust.

Chapel Cottage is a beautifully renovated 17th-century stone property, tucked away in the peaceful hamlet of Croasdale, near the village of Ennerdale Bridge, Cumberland.

Once a Primitive Methodist Chapel serving the local farming community and gentry, the cottage has been lovingly transformed over five decades by its current owners.

Many original features remain, including exposed oak beams upstairs—possibly salvaged from ships of the Spanish Armada wrecked in the Irish Sea in 1588.

The accommodation includes five thoughtfully named bedrooms, each reflecting the direction they face.

The Farm Room, with a king-size bed and views of the beck, is accessed through the Lake Room, which contains a double and a three-quarter bed, separated by Japanese-style screens for privacy. These two connected rooms are very suited to family groups.

The Sea Room offers a double bed, the Beck Room is a snug single, and the Barn Room, located on the ground floor, features a king-size bed and direct access to the patio.

The ground floor boasts five generous living spaces, including a snug, two dining rooms, a reception room, two bathrooms, and a fully equipped kitchen.

One of these rooms is enhanced by a log-burning open fire, while the upstairs lounge is equipped with a Smart TV connected to Satellite, Freesat (but not connected to the internet) and Blu-ray video recorder. It provides a peaceful retreat.

Two bathrooms, each with a bath, overhead shower, basin, and WC, serve the property.

The enclosed garden, with its lawn, stream, patio, and summer house, offers a secure and sunny spot to unwind.

Ennerdale is a hidden gem in the Lake District, offering unspoilt landscapes and a sense of seclusion.

Ennerdale Water, just a short two-mile walk away, is ideal for wild swimming, paddle boarding, or simply enjoying the stillness.

The ancient Blakeley Raise Stone Circle offers a glimpse into the region’s prehistoric past, and many easy walks straight out of the cottage provide a charming way to explore the countryside.

For the more ambitious fell walkers, Pillar, Steeple, Red Pike and passes to Wast Water and Buttermere are real challenges.

Nearby, the National Trust’s Wordsworth House and Garden in Cockermouth celebrates the life of the famous poet.

Wildlife enthusiasts can spot red squirrels in the garden hopping on branches over the beck, and can explore such places as the Whinlatter Forest Visitor Centre with its zip wire and mountain bike tracks, the Honister Pass slate Mine and its adventures, the Lake District Wildlife Park and the wetlands of Dubwath Silver Meadows near Cockermouth.

For a different experience, the Lakes Distillery near Bassenthwaite Lake offers guided tours and tastings of locally crafted whisky in a picturesque setting.

Whether you are drawn to the natural beauty, the literary heritage, or the peaceful pace of life, Chapel Cottage offers a refined and characterful base for discovering the very best of Cumberland.
