On the peaceful wooded banks of the River Yealm, just three miles from the coast, holidays in Yealmpton offer a peaceful base from which to explore South Devon. Slightly off the main tourist trail, here you’ll enjoy the relaxed pace of village life, yet only ever be a short drive from Devon’s most loved attractions and activities.
Once a thriving market town, today you’ll find Yealmpton filled with a generous handful of shops, eateries and pubs. The Rose and Crown is a popular gastro pub with a large, sunny beer garden and a roaring fire come winter, while The Volunteer Inn is a proper village pub filled with friendly locals and well-kept ales. There’s also a Chinese restaurant and takeaway, which you’ll be surprised to find in an ancient thatched cottage, believed to be where the nursery rhyme ‘Old Mother Hubbard’ was written. For those wishing to make the most of their self-catering cottage’s kitchen, you can stock up on organic local produce from Ben’s Farm Shop, or visit Pip’s Pick Your Own for fruit and veg as fresh as it gets.
Yealmpton is a haven for those who love to be outdoors, with loads of lovely riverside trails and countryside footpaths for dog walks or family bike rides. Head to the woods in the heart of Yealmpton, with its old network of caves, or follow the paths that weave through fields and country lanes.
When staying in Yealmpton, make sure to visit the picturesque sailing villages of Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrers, only a few miles away, where you can sail, paddle, row or kayak along the sheltered estuary waters, join the South West Coast Path for mesmerising cliff top walks, and enjoy seafood suppers or sunset drinks at the three popular waterside pubs.
No trip to South Devon is complete without visiting the beaches, and a holiday in Yealmpton should be no different. For soft sand, sea swimming and a popular cafe, Mothecombe Beach is an easy drive from Yealmpton, while nearby Wembury offers lots of rock pools for young explorers.
The ocean city of Plymouth is also nearby, where you can visit the city centre’s shops, bars and restaurants, find rainy day attractions like the aquarium or cinemas, and visit the historic Barbican waterfront, home of the Mayflower Steps.
