Two miles from the centre of the friendly little Dartmoor town of Chagford, this ancient thatched Devon longhouse sits in its old original farmyard, (no farm animals are kept around the property),now a courtyard surrounded by barns. Built in medieval times and full of history, it is listed and has amazing ancient features and, since it comes with a cottage in the courtyard, provides flexible accommodation for couples and groups of friends. An ancient oak door leads you into the cross passage, with utility room and bathroom in the lower part of the house where animals once dozed. The sitting room is stunning, with traditional open fire in a huge inglenook fireplace and old paneled walls. Off this is a quiet study with jigsaws and games. The kitchen is typical of an old farmhouse with big dining table in the centre and modern electric Aga. Two staircases lead you upstairs to four simple, restful bedrooms with white walls and uneven wood floors. The sense of history here is amazing, with a wonderful atmosphere. Outside, the cottage provides a lovely space for anyone who wants peace or independence, with its own kitchen with dining area, sitting room with wood burning stove and two upstairs bedrooms with a bathroom. Outside, there is plenty of space to wander and dream with a big lawn garden, which does have a 5ft drop so keep an eye on the children, surrounded by 130 acres of traditional Devon fields. If you come with a group, why not make a party by arranging to hire the medieval threshing barn across the courtyard, which makes a fine space for a banquet or revel? (suggested for summer months only) With Dartmoor on the doorstep, this is a great place for walking, cycling or touring the area, or wander the streets of Chagford or Okehampton with little shops and friendly pubs and eateries. Visit Castle Drogo or head to the cathedral city of Exeter. Whatever your hopes and dreams for your Devon holiday, Hole Farm is a very special place to stay, and perfect for small groups.
