On the edge of the tranquil hamlet of Dunkeswell Abbey, in a quiet country lane is Abbey Cross Barn. This former barn has been converted to an interesting, rustic-looking, wood-clad cottage. You enter through a little glass-panelled lobby to a pine-floored, L-shaped sitting room with dining area and French windows to the terrace and garden. There’s also a well-equipped modern kitchen. Stairs lead to the first floor and a small landing (5’6″ headroom), off which are two bedrooms under the eaves, both overlooking the garden – a double with low sloping ceilings and a twin (5’8″ lintel, sloping ceiling). Outside is good-sized garden with a table, chairs and barbecue overlooking the owner’s apple orchard and vegetable garden. If you’re looking to explore this lovely part of Devon, then you’re in a good spot. Nearby is the market town Honiton, famed for its lace making history, with lots of shops and a good leisure centre. For fun days at the seaside the regency towns Sidmouth, Seaton and Beer are all within a short drive as is the Jurassic Coast for fossil hunting and iconic Lyme Regis. Abbey Cross Barn is a beautiful, peaceful place in which to relax at the end of a day’s exploring.
