More information

Bere Alston 1.5 miles. Clamoak Cottage rests on the popular Tamara Coast to Coast Way in the Tamar Valley AONB, in Clamoak near Bere Alston, with fabulous walks from the doorstep. Dating from 1815, this romantic hideaway is set within majestic surroundings on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, with easy routes to the sea. It’s the ideal base for couples, families, golfers, fishing groups and their four-legged friends, eager to enjoy its picture-postcard views and location. After parking in the excellent off-road space, you’re greeted by tranquillity. The conservatory is a highlight, perfect for morning coffee, sketching, or watching the sun set over the water. Both the conservatory and living room frame dynamic views of the Tamar Estuary, where birds glide over mudflats and channels, an ornithologist’s dream. In cooler months, sink into stylish sofas beside the woodburning fire beneath original beams. The amply equipped kitchen features both induction/electric and AGA cooking, plus traditional units, wooden worktops, and all you need to prepare delicious meals. At day’s end, retire to either the super-king-size or the king-size bedroom, leaving the curtains open for spectacular morning views. Outside, a side and rear lawned garden offers space for dogs, while the terrace overlooking the water is ideal for barbecues. From here, watch dinghies, sailboats, paddleboards, and kayaks drift by, making it an inspiring scene for artists. The estuary also provides opportunities for fishing, and nearby rivers and lakes offer further angling spots, making it one of the best locations for fishing in the South West. Tavistock, a short drive away, boasts striking architecture, markets, and varied cuisine, from The Cornish Arms’ Michelin Bib Gourmand to St Mellion’s Michelin-starred Crocadon Green. Golfers are spoilt for choice with Tavistock’s two courses and the highly regarded St Mellion and Yelverton courses, both ranked among the UK’s top 100. Fans of the TV series Beyond Paradise may recognise The Boatyard and local café, as well as nearby Pentillie Castle and Weir Quay properties. Looe, with its TV police station, offers a great day out, easily combined with trips to Polperro and the unspoilt Rame Peninsula. Bere Ferrers, just a mile away, marks the meeting point of the Tamar and Tavy rivers. The Olde Plough pub serves locally sourced produce, with a courtyard garden enjoying west-facing river views, ideal after tennis, cycling, or a scenic walk. For adventure, cycle the Tamar Trails or explore local routes, or if you prefer a gentler pace, take the Heritage Valley Train to Calstock, then walk to Cothele and its boatquay tea room. The Tamar Valley AONB offers extensive footpaths and cycleways, including the Devon Heritage Route, and sits within the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site. Whether for walking, cycling, painting, golf, fishing, or simply appreciating nature, Clamoak Cottage is the perfect retreat by the coast.
