Strete sits on the cliff tops with stunning views across Start Bay and over to the mouth of the River Dart. Situated on the picturesque coastal road between Dartmouth -fifteen minutes away, and Kingsbridge 20 minutes away and with the expansive three-mile beach of Slapton Sands a few minutes’ drive or a scenic walk away. There’s a regular bus service between the towns passing the beach (if the walk back up from the beach seems daunting!). The village itself has direct access to the South West Coast Path, a good pub-the Kings Arms and a village shop. If that’s not enough the popular villages of Slapton, and Torcross are just a short drive away, and the towns of Salcombe and Totnes are also within a forty-minute drive. Woodlands family theme park and Dartmouth Golf and Country Club are just 10 minutes away. Strete is perfectly situated to really get the most out of this wonderful area of South Devon.

Strete couldn’t be better placed for exploring this exceptionally beautiful stretch of coastline with the breath taking golden sweep of Slapton Sands in one direction, and pretty Blackpool Sands and then on to Dartmouth in the other.
The village itself is made up of a few thatched cottages and larger properties snaking along the coast road and you’ll be made to feel welcome both in the well-stocked village shop and cliff top pub. Stroll along the South West Coast Path or jump in the car heading west and you’ll very soon come to the 3 mile golden arc of Slapton Sands backed by Slapton Ley Nature Reserve. With so much room on the beach it never feels crowded, and if you’d like to stretch your legs you can head up to Torcross for fish and chips on the sea wall as the sun goes down, or enjoy a meal at a choice of two excellent pubs in Slapton village.
Travelling west from Strete along the coast road towards Dartmouth you’ll soon find yourself at Blackpool Sands, a family friendly golden sand and shingle beach backed by wooded cliffs reminiscent of the Mediterranean. Here you’ll find everything you need for the perfect day on the beach including RNLI life guards, excellent food, snacks and ice creams from the Venus Café and if you’re feeling adventurous paddleboard and kayak hire.
A trip to historic Dartmouth should be on everyone’s holiday bucket list with its picturesque harbour and tiny cobbled streets lined with art galleries, boutiques, café’s and bars. Watch the hustle and bustle on the estuary from a shore side restaurant as fishing boats and yachts vie for position, children catch crabs or leap off the wall in summer time and the odd seal pokes its head out to see what’s going on. From here you can take a boat trip upriver to the pretty waterside village of Dittisham, take a water taxi to Dartmouth Castle at the harbour mouth, or jump on a steam train to explore the beautiful Dart estuary in style.
With all this to see and do a holiday cottage in Strete offers an excellent base to explore this beautiful area.
