The quaint market town of Middleton-in-Teesdale, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offers a range of shops, pubs and places to eat and is surrounded by superb walking country, with high open moorland as well as the famous and not to be missed High Force waterfalls.
Close by, vibrant Barnard Castle stands on the site of an ancient Roman fort, and the medieval ruins of the castle still tower over the river and are well worth a visit.
Slightly further afield, the Northern Dales are waiting to be discovered and visits to medieval Raby Castle with its deer park, Bowes Museum and Egglestone Hall Gardens are not to be missed. A great family retreat whatever the time of year.
