Carry on a touch further and you come to Bowness, a livelier hub with lakeside restaurants, quirky stores, cinema nights, and the much-loved World of Beatrix Potter attraction. Go the opposite direction and you’ll land in Ambleside, another bustling Lakeland town brimming with walking routes, eateries and traditional watering holes. If you fancy exploring quieter corners, Troutbeck sits a little further along the road, offering classic country pubs, Holehird Gardens and the atmospheric National Trust property of Townend. Beyond that, the dramatic sweep of Kirkstone Pass leads you towards Brotherswater and Ullswater, proper postcard country.
