Manor Cottage is an exceptionally spacious and well-presented period house, with a large level garden and allocated off road parking for 2 cars. Nestled beneath the St Georges church in the popular village of Dittisham, Manor Cottage forms part of the original Manor House built in the mid 1800’s. This comfortably home from home has 4 bedrooms one of which has an ensuite bathroom, a good-sized kitchen dining room, an enormous and a conservatory.
Dittisham must be one of the prettiest waterside villages in Devon and has long been a mecca for those who enjoy sailing, boating and just generally messing about on the water. The village is lively, particularly during the summer months and has a great pub on the waterside. The quay is a favourite spot for crabbing and a tug on a bell rope calls the ferry boatman to collect you to visit Greenway, once Agatha Christie’s holiday home, and now part of the National Trust.
The nearby naval town of Dartmouth and the bohemian town of Totnes are both nearby, easily reached by car or indeed by passenger ferry which runs up and down the River Dart during the summer months.
All in all, Manor Cottage provides a very comfortable base from which to enjoy and explore this wonderfully picturesque and unspoilt part of Devon.
Please note: If you have received the benefit of the reduced occupancy discount only the master bedroom and double bedroom will be available for your stay.
Doors from the patio lead out to the large level garden, mainly laid to lawn with borders planted with established shrubs and conifers. Patio area to side of the conservatory with table to seat 7 and barbecue.
A destination for keen sailors, fishermen and artists alike, the tranquil location of Dittisham is hard to beat. This attractive riverside village nestles on the banks of the serene River Dart, and benefits from a couple of pubs, the wonderful waterside Anchor Stone Café and a great community store offering local artisan produce.
The pontoon is a popular place for kids and families to relax and have a go at crabbing. This favourite holiday activity inevitably results in shrieks of delight as the cranky crustaceans are admired and compared whilst their captors try not to get nipped! Our top tip for crabbing success is to bait your line with little bits of bacon which crabs seem to find irresistible.
Directly opposite Dittisham, and just a short ferry ride across the river is Greenway House, once the holiday home of the famous crime author, Agatha Christie. The house along with its stunning river bank gardens are open to the public, and definitely worth a visit. Dogs are very welcome too, in the gardens on a short lead. This stretch of river has seen plenty of historic vessels pass by over the centuries, with tales from Viking long boats exploring the waters to American landing craft rolling past during the 2nd World War.
A variety of locally grown sweet plum, the 'Ditsum plum' was named after the village. You might spot some in the orchards over the summer months, or if you are lucky you might even get to taste some. They are sweet eating plums particularly good in jam – perfect for a Dittisham twist on a Devon cream tea!
The market town of Totnes and the waterfront town of Dartmouth are close to Dittisham, both with plentiful shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants. The towns also have supermarkets, handy for stocking up on your weekly shop.
There are also numerous beaches close to Dittisham. We recommend driving the breathtaking coast road from Dartmouth towards Torcross and stop off at Blackpool Sands and Slapton Sands on your way. You can also hire boats and have sailing lessons from the Dittisham’s pontoon, so whether you’re a complete beginner or an established sea dog you’re sure to be tempted onto the water during your holidays.
