There is also Europe’s oldest Saxon church located in the village of Escomb which is half a mile away down by the River Wear. Lace up your walking boots and embark on a short car journey to Bishop Auckland for Auckland Castle Deer House; here you can admire the 18th century Gothic building and learn about the riveting history of the estate and enjoy woodland walks. Also in Bishop Auckland town centre there are the Miners Art Gallery, The Spanish Art Gallery, and The Auckland Castle Observation Tower to enjoy. Historians will also be thrilled with Binchester Roman Fort, which can be found in the small village of Binchester and visitors can have an insight into Roman life in Britain. Resting near the River Wear is the county city of Durham, boasting a wealth of attractions, including the inspiring, Romanesque architecture at the cathedral, a Norman castle and plenty of museums to keep you busy for the day!
