The Welsh Highland & Ffestiniog steam railway has a station here and is well worth putting a day to one side to travel the two hours, through some breathtaking scenery to the harbour town of Porthmadog; a shorter trip takes you to Beddgelert, where you can visit the grave of Gelert, the faithful hound of legend. Within fifteen minutes’ drive you will find the foothills of Snowdonia, from here you can access footpaths to the very summit of Mount Snowdon, or a mountain railway offers the chance to travel in comfort from nearby Llanberis. Anglesey is a short distance away and the Menai Strait provides a variety of water activities from RIB rides to dinghy sailing.
