Head to the former royal burgh of Wigtown, Scotland’s national book town, home to an annual book festival, as well as a golf club, castle and Wigtown Bird Hide nature reserve, while the coast at Castle Douglas and the sandy beach of Dalavan are closest to the cottage, around a 15-mile drive away.
