The local area

Tucked between dramatic cliffs and the rolling hills of Exmoor National Park, Combe Martin is a charming little coastal village on Devon’s rugged north coast. A quieter, laidback alternative to some of the region’s busier resorts, holidays in Combe Martin offer a slice of old-school seaside charm with a wild and wonderful natural edge.

Framed by a sheltered bay with crystal-clear waters, it’s no surprise Combe Martin is a firm favourite with those looking to unwind and reconnect with nature. Whether you’re peering into rock pools at low tide, diving headfirst into water sport adventures, or soaking up the sun on the small but perfectly formed beach, there’s something here for everyone. The calm waters make it a top pick for paddle boarding and sea swimming, while the surrounding coves, caves and cliffs invite exploration by boat, kayak or on foot. You can hire equipment right by the beach.

If you’re drawn to dramatic coastal walks, Combe Martin sits on the edge of the South West Coast Path, offering some of the most breathtaking hikes in the region (and we don’t just mean from the hills!). Head east towards Heddon’s Mouth for windswept moorland views, or west to the towering cliffs of Little Hangman and Great Hangman — the highest sea cliffs in the country. Keep your eyes peeled for Exmoor ponies, soaring buzzards, and maybe even dolphins out in the bay.

Back in the village, you’ll find traditional pubs, tea rooms and eateries serving up the best of North Devon’s produce. From fresh seafood platters to cream teas and piled-high ice creams, dining here is laid-back and delicious. Grab fish and chips to enjoy on the seafront, or head to one of the cosy pubs like the beachfront Dolphin Inn, or the quirky Pack O’ Cards, with its four floors, 13 rooms and 52 windows.

For family-friendly holidays, the Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park is a must — part zoo, part theme park, and all adventure. And if you fancy a day trip, the wilds of Exmoor National Park are right on the doorstep, offering endless opportunities for stargazing, cycling, and river swimming.

Combe Martin may be small, but it knows how to put on a show. The village events calendar is dotted with quirky, family-friendly events that bring the community and its visitors together, from the famous Hunting of the Earl of Rone Festival to the week-long carnival in August, and regular farmers’ markets too.

Whether you’re after coastal adventures, peaceful beach days, or a gateway to Exmoor’s untamed natural beauty, holidays in Combe Martin serve up North Devon at its most authentic — relaxed, rugged, and irresistibly scenic.
