The local area

Perched on rugged cliffs overlooking the Atlantic in North Cornwall, Tintagel is steeped in myth and legend. Surrounded by stunning, dramatic scenery, the historic ruins of Tintagel Castle and beautiful beaches, it’s no surprise that holidays in Tintagel are so popular.

Meaning ‘village on a mountain’, Tintagel is set high on the north coast of Cornwall between Padstow and Bude. The village is famed for its mystical clifftop castle which, legend has it, was the birthplace of King Arthur. No holiday in Tintagel is complete without exploring the Norman castle ruins, half on the mainland and half on an island, which are now maintained by English Heritage. After learning all about King Arthur and the castle’s history, you can follow the footpath down to a little beach below the island called Castle Cove, home to Merlin’s Cave. Not only is Tintagel Castle and its legendary past fascinating, it also offers some of the most breathtaking coastal views in Cornwall – no wonder it’s one of the most visited places in Britain!

There are many more things to do in Tintagel than visit the castle. Back in Tintagel village you’ll find King Arthur’s Great Halls, an impressive granite building dedicated to Arthurian legend, as well as the National Trust’s Old Post Office, a wonky-roofed medieval building with over 600 years of history to explore. There’s no shortage of shops, pubs and restaurants in Tintagel, from quirky gift shops, fudge and Cornish pasties, to traditional pub grub and Cornish cream teas.

Our favourite thing to do in Tintagel is head to the South West Coast Path. The walks along North Cornwall’s coast are stunning with gigantic headlands, crystal-clear turquoise waters and an abundance of wildlife – if you’re lucky you can often spot seals! With the coast path passing along the edge of the village, Tintagel is perfect for walking holidays and dog-friendly getaways. Follow the coast path for four miles to the pretty fishing village of Boscastle, or head the other direction to reach picture-perfect Port Isaac, home of Doc Martin.

There’s no shortage of beautiful beaches near Tintagel, including some of the sweeping surf beaches Cornwall is famed for. Nearby you’ll find Trebarwith Strand and Tregardock where you can ride the Atlantic waves, as well as an abundance of pretty coves, such as Castle Cove and Bossiney. Within a 30 minute drive you’ll reach the beaches of Polzeath, Daymer Bay in Rock and Bude.

From stunning natural beauty to mythical kings and castles, coastal walks to world-class surf and golden beaches to rugged moorland, a holiday in Tintagel makes a great base to experience the best bits of North Cornwall.
