More information

St Michaels, a spacious detached holiday home in Bigbury on Sea, is situated just 5 minutes’ stroll downhill, straight onto one of the finest sandy beaches in the region. Perfectly located for a beach holiday and giving easy access to the South West Coastal Path for walkers keen to take in amazing scenery and clifftop walks, St Michaels is also just a short drive to the beautiful surrounding areas of the South Hams. Offering spectacular views of the waves, Burgh Island, and the kite surfers all year round, there is ample space for storing surfboards, wet suits, kayaks and bikes, and with a dog friendly garden, this is the perfect property for an active family looking to spend their time by the sea. Equally out of season, a relaxing haven from which to embrace the cliff walks, fresh sea air and watch the ever-changing tides.

The Pilchard Inn, a unique and friendly pub is within easy 15 minutes walking distance, located on Burgh Island, iconic in itself with its hotel, now open to the public, being the writing haunt of authors such as Agatha Christie and Noel Coward and home to the Nettlefold restaurant. There is a small convenience store in the neighbouring cove a short walk away. A few minutes' drive away there is an excellent village store as well as a popular pub serving great food and The Oyster Shack restaurant not far. Discovery Surf School offers lessons and equipment from the beach, where there is also a café and beach shop. This really is a superb destination, offering flexible and comfortable accommodation all year round.

Outside

Fenced and gated gardens surround the property with steps leading down from the house and the terrace to the lawn and mature gardens. Beautiful views across to Bantham Beach and Burgh Island can be enjoyed from the terrace which is furnished with rattan garden table and seating, charcoal barbecue.

The local area

Bigbury-on-Sea is best known for its proximity to the stunning Burgh Island. Renowned for its art deco hotel which was once frequented by Agatha Christie, the island is easily accessed across the sandy causeway at low tide. The island is open for everyone to explore (with the exception of the hotel and grounds), and it is well worth a walk to the top for its breath-taking views. You can stop for refreshments in the 14th Century smugglers’ haunt, the Pilchard Inn, and if you find yourself cut off by the tide, you can catch a ride on the famous sea tractor back across the water.

Bigbury-on-Sea also has a reputation as a fantastic surf destination. Take the plunge with the Discovery Surf School or simply grab your bucket and spade for some traditional sandcastle action on acres of golden sand, or enjoy a swim in the shallow bathing waters. This is a great family beach with life guards on duty from May to September. You can also bring your dog but there are some restrictions during the summer months.

The village has a small shop for all your essentials, and the Venus Café is a great place to refuel after you have worked up an appetite on the beach.

A holiday cottage in Bigbury-on-Sea is the perfect base to relax, unwind and explore the beautiful South Devon coast at your leisure.
