How I Choose the Perfect UK Cottage Break (Whatever the Season, Whoever I’m Travelling With)

I get asked this a lot. Usually by a friend mid-scroll on holidaycottage.com, phone held up to my face, saying “okay but how do you actually pick?” And I get it — we’ve got cottages tucked into every corner of the country, from Snowdonia peaks to Cornish coves, and staring down hundreds of gorgeous options can honestly be more stressful than just staying home.

So I thought I’d pull together everything I’ve learned from a year (okay, several years) of cottage-hopping across the UK. Not a list of “top 10 destinations you’ve already seen a hundred times” — more a proper guide to how I actually narrow it down, depending on the season, the company, and the mood I’m chasing. A confession before we start: I didn’t always plan holidays this way. For years I’d just search “cottage, sleeps 6, dog friendly” and click on whatever came up first, then wonder why the trip never quite matched the daydream. If the answer is “slower,” I go looking for somewhere genuinely remote. It sounds terrifying until you try it, and then it’s the only holiday you want to talk about for months.
