Breamore (pronounced Bremmer) is a small unspoilt village oozing English heritage and history. The village is surrounded by resplendent countryside designated as an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Site of Special Scientific Interest, protected by conservation area status. Plenty of woods and countryside for walking. You might take in the river Avon which runs close by, and reputed to contain more species of fish than any other river in the UK.
The main draw to visitors in the area is Breamore House, a statuesque Elizabethan Manor House dating from 1583, whose estate included Breamore village. The house is privately owned, but open to the public and looks today, very much as it did all those centuries ago. The estate encompasses worker’s cottages and listed historic houses, an ancient corn mill and one of the best examples of a Saxon Church in the south of England. The whole village is a historical gem with some buildings and cottages from the 14th Century.
Another feature for Breamore, is a rather unusual turf maze called ‘Mizmaze’. You can get to it via a footpath near Breamore House. Historically the Mizmaze was used for fertility dancing on holy days back in Pagan times and later by monks for their penances. Breamore Mizmaze is well worth seeing and boasts one of only eight remaining turf mazes such as this, to survive in England today.
For a great meal, try the village’s pub – The Bat and Ball. Wholesome hearty dishes with some having the novelty of a South African twist. However, Breamore is only 2 miles from the town of Fordingbridge which has lots of restaurants, pubs and eateries and the beautiful cathedral city of Salisbury is only 8 miles away.
