Linhays, a quintessential thatched Devon cottage, tucked on the side of a hill with views down to the sea at Start Bay, is absolutely charming. Pretty as a picture with a delightful very private garden the cottage is full of character, surprisingly spacious and provides a really welcoming, home-from-home, comfortable and attractive spot from which to explore this stunning area. North Hallsands’ shingle beach is a ten minute walk and from here the South West coastal path begs to be explored with fabulous walks along rugged cliffs that dip into sandy coves offering some of the best scenery in the UK.
The pretty gardens are arranged on three terraces, with lawns and a profusion of plants with winding paths and steps down to the parking area and the lane (the garden is not suitable for todlers). The studio garden room, tucked in a corner, houses garden furniture and a separate utility room. The cottage is alongside a very quiet country lane.
Sitting a quarter of a mile inland, Bickerton is a sleepy hamlet set in rolling countryside. With stunning sea views the short walk to the beach at Hallsands is breath-taking.
Hallsands offers an interesting history, during the 1890s, dredging began offshore from the village to supply materials to the nearby Plymouth dockyard. Eventually, the level of the beach began to drop and ultimately a bad storm during 1917 saw many of the coastal cottages collapse into the sea. The remains of the old houses can still be seen from a viewing platform just outside the village while the pebble beach at North Hallsands offers a quiet spot for swimming, sunbathing, or fishing.
At Hallsands you can join the South West Coast Path, offering miles of stunning coastal walks either easterly to Beesands and Torcross or westerly to the nearby lighthouse at Start Point. The latter offers fantastic, far-reaching views back over the bay to Slapton Sands and beyond, and is a must-see for anyone visiting one of our Bickerton or Hallsands holiday cottages.
The beautiful and remote beach at Great Mattiscombe Sands is a short walk downhill from the lighthouse car park and is featured in our 10 favourite South West beaches. In the other direction, the nearby village of Beesands, accessible by a short walk along the coastal path or by car, is home to The Cricket Inn a cracking waterfront pub that offers good food, fresh fish and local ales. Also in Beesands, Britannia @ the Beach is a highly acclaimed seafood shack which is winning rave reviews for its quirky set-up and outstanding food.
Further east, the coastal path makes a short journey up and over to the wide stretches of beach at Torcross, with good restaurants, cafes and shop. Slapton Ley nature reserve here is a paradise for walkers and nature-lovers, offering an abundance of wildlife and many pleasant strolls.
Further afield, you will find the stunning harbour town of Dartmouth after a spectacular coastal drive or the nearby market town of Kingsbridge which offers all the facilities you need.
A holiday cottage in Bickerton offers a tranquil base from which to explore the stunning surrounding South Devon coast and countryside.
