More information

The White House, family owned since 1927, stands on a promontory overlooking Torcross in South Devon and enjoys dramatic sea views from most windows with a Mediterranean style south facing terrace overlooking the beach below. It has recently been sympathetically renovated, retaining the character of the old house with slate floors and period details. The renovation has cleverly included space for a sleek modern kitchen and dining room, the heart of the house.

The owner has created an idyllic retreat where different generations can enjoy family holidays together, or friends meet for convivial weekends. There are two sitting rooms, one, informal, with the television, Wi-Fi and games, the other for quieter pursuits with a wood burner for the winter months and French doors onto the south facing terrace. This terrace is one of the joys of the house with a low slate topped wall and an uninterrupted view across a secluded cove to the craggy headland of Start Point with its lighthouse. Just outside this cliff top property are three sets of steps, two going down to the village of Torcross and one down to the secluded Cove beach. The South West Coast path passes right by the gate and glorious beach and cliff walks start here.

It is a very romantic place to stay. At night, from the windows of the two south facing bedrooms, you can see the moonlight shining on the sea, listen to the sounds of the waves on the beach and the Lighthouse beams around the rooms. The view from the other side shows the sweep of Start Bay to Dartmouth and looks down on the fresh water Slapton Ley, with the lively little village of Torcross below.

Limpet, an adjoining studio apartment can be booked in association with The White House increasing total accommodation to 10.

Outside

Door from living room to wide gravelled south terrace, bordered by a low slate topped wall overlooking the beach with far reaching views to Start Point. Teak garden table, benches and chairs. At front of property, child safe enclosed terrace overlooking Torcross and the bay.

Please Note: Because the wall on the south terrace is not very high it is very important that parents impress upon children that they should not to stand on it, and if they sit on it to keep their feet on the house side. Very young children should be accompanied. Several generations of children in the owners’ family have holidayed here and there has never been an accident!

The local area

Torcross is located at the southern end of Slapton Sands, a narrow strip of land between the beautiful Start Bay and the stunning freshwater lake at Slapton Ley Nature Reserve. Surrounded by picturesque scenery on all sides, Torcross is home to some fantastic cafés and pubs and is the perfect place to enjoy a sunny afternoon watching (or participating in) watersports and fishing on the vast shingle beach.

While modern day guests will find a sleepy fishing village, nestling peacefully at the edge of a 2 mile beach, the area has a fascinating past. Most famously, during World War II, Torcross was evacuated along some of its neighbouring villages to make way for 15,000 allied troops who needed the beach to practice for the D-Day landings. Tragically, the operation ended in disaster, and the Exercise Tiger memorial at the edge of the ley commemorates the 800 Americans who lost their lives in the bay.

The short coastal walk from Torcross to neighbouring Beesands provides sensational views and is dotted with remnants from the military presence, as well as traces of the area's slate quarrying past. Beesands is also home to the fantastic seafood shack Britannia @ The Beach and the popular pub The Cricket Inn.

Continuing further along this stretch of rugged coastline (if you have the stamina) you will reach Hallsands and the Lighthouse. Meanwhile, a short drive will take you to wonderful beaches at Blackpool Sands in one direction or the more remote Lannacombe, Mattiscombe and Gara Rock in the other.

Twenty minutes away, the village of East Portlemouth with its golden sandy beaches, is where you can take the passenger ferry over the estuary to Salcombe, famous for its shops, sailing and great pubs and restaurants. The towns of Dartmouth and Kingsbridge are also within easy reach while the villages nearest neighbour, Slapton also boasts two great pubs.

A holiday cottage in Torcross offers a superb spot from which to explore this magnificent stretch of South Devon coastline.
