Just 10 miles away, the picturesque harbour town of Padstow makes a wonderful day out. Picture hidden coves, wind-lashed headlands and pretty resorts like something lost in time and it’s easy to see why holidays in Mawgan Porth tick all the boxes for relaxation, peace and bracing sea air. Jutting straight out into the Atlantic, this part of the north Cornwall coast faces the full might of the ocean. During the winter, gales howl, sending huge waves crashing against the cliffs. But step out on the right day on to the beach at Mawgan Porth and you’ll be mesmerised by the colour of the sea and brilliance of the sand.
Just a few minutes’ walk from your holiday home, the west-facing golden sands are protected by headlands on either side. A small stream runs down one side. Surf lessons are to hand with several surf schools based at the beach. Alternatively, bring a bodyboard and just have fun under your own steam. Lifeguards are also on duty at peak times for peace of mind. When the sea is calm, there are also several dive sites in the Mawgan Porth area, including some dramatic shipwrecks to explore. Just across the road from the beach is a parade of shops where beach goods, snacks and a bistro can be found.
If you follow the river inland along the Vale of Lanherne you’ll arrive at the pretty village of St Mawgan with its quaint buildings, Japanese garden, ancient ford, antiques shop and lovely tea-room and pub.
Lying on the South West Coast Path, Mawgan Porth is surrounded by plenty of walks with stunning views. Watergate Bay and Newquay can be found to the south and the spectacular rock stacks at Bedruthan Steps and the wild Trevose Head lie to the north – a dramatic beauty spot, with three distinctive pointed slate stacks jutting out along the beach. For a Cornish cream tea with a view, stop at the lovely Carnewas Tearooms.
A series of beautiful bays and beaches – Porthcothan, Treyarnon, Watergate, Harlyn, Constantine and family-friendly Porth – are all within easy reach. Cornwall’s famous foodie town of Padstow is just a little further on, where several of Rick Stein's seafood eateries are located.
Whether you want energising walks along the cliffs, beachcombing at low tide or to venture into the breakers, a holiday in Mawgan Porth is the perfect place.
