More information

Dunedin Cottage is a stunning period house located on the quayside of one of Devon’s most picturesque waterside villages – Dittisham. With the wonderful River Dart immediately on its doorstep, guests have the opportunity to enjoy a waterside holiday, along with soaking up the relaxed riverside ambiance within the comfort of the tastefully presented home. Sitting right on the quayside, guests are presented with uninterrupted views across the river towards Greenway Estate, from Agatha Christy fame, and will be certain to appreciate morning drinks whilst the early light shimmers on the high tide. With outside seating on the front patio, as well as in the rear garden, al fresco dining is sure to be on the cards during warmer months, however with the benefit of a spacious well-equipped kitchen/diner and cosy living room with log burner, there’s plenty of space to relax indoors should the weather come in.

Offering flexible accommodation, with a separate studio situated at the back of the garden and featuring an ensuite twin room and its own sitting area, in addition to three well-presented bedrooms and two further bathrooms within the main house, Dunedin Cottage is well suited for multi-generational families, groups sharing and smaller parties alike.

Outside

A gravelled patio area on the quayside with table and chairs for 6, as well as a rear garden with lawn, flower beds and paved patio with table and chairs for 8.

The separate studio has its own decked terrace with table and chairs for 2.

The local area

A destination for keen sailors, fishermen and artists alike, the tranquil location of Dittisham is hard to beat. This attractive riverside village nestles on the banks of the serene River Dart, and benefits from a couple of pubs, the wonderful waterside Anchor Stone Café and a great community store offering local artisan produce.

The pontoon is a popular place for kids and families to relax and have a go at crabbing. This favourite holiday activity inevitably results in shrieks of delight as the cranky crustaceans are admired and compared whilst their captors try not to get nipped! Our top tip for crabbing success is to bait your line with little bits of bacon which crabs seem to find irresistible.

Directly opposite Dittisham, and just a short ferry ride across the river is Greenway House, once the holiday home of the famous crime author, Agatha Christie. The house along with its stunning river bank gardens are open to the public, and definitely worth a visit. Dogs are very welcome too, in the gardens on a short lead. This stretch of river has seen plenty of historic vessels pass by over the centuries, with tales from Viking long boats exploring the waters to American landing craft rolling past during the 2nd World War.

A variety of locally grown sweet plum, the 'Ditsum plum' was named after the village. You might spot some in the orchards over the summer months, or if you are lucky you might even get to taste some. They are sweet eating plums particularly good in jam – perfect for a Dittisham twist on a Devon cream tea!

The market town of Totnes and the waterfront town of Dartmouth are close to Dittisham, both with plentiful shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants. The towns also have supermarkets, handy for stocking up on your weekly shop.

There are also numerous beaches close to Dittisham. We recommend driving the breathtaking coast road from Dartmouth towards Torcross and stop off at Blackpool Sands and Slapton Sands on your way. You can also hire boats and have sailing lessons from the Dittisham’s pontoon, so whether you’re a complete beginner or an established sea dog you’re sure to be tempted onto the water during your holidays.

A holiday cottage in Dittisham makes a great base for exploring the beautiful River Dart and the stunning stretch of coastline around Dartmouth.

Parking

There is no designated parking with the property due to its location right on the quayside. At low tide guests can drop off and pick up on the quayside/beach and there is unrestricted parking available on Riverside Road (approx. 2min drive or 10min walk away) or all day parking in The Level or The Ham car parks (just over 5mins walk away). 7 day tickets can be purchased at a cost of £30 (as of September 2024). Available via RingGo.

If parking on Riverside Road or The Ham car park, a footpath to the rear of The Ham field (by the public toilets) will bring you out low down on Manor Street. Alternatively, if the tide is out and you have a suitable vehicle, turn right out of The Ham car park, along the beach and under the pier and Dunedin Cottage is up the stone steps on The Quay.
