Chawton is one of the prettiest and most unspoilt villages in Hampshire and is set within the northern borders of the South Downs National Park. It is the chocolate box village which is the birthplace of six of Jane Austen’s beloved novels including Pride and Prejudice. The village is home to Jane Austen’s House and Museum as well as to Chawton House (where Jane’s brother lived), all within walking distance of the cottage as is the local pub and café. The surrounding countryside provides ample opportunity for a number of country pursuits, as well as visiting Winchester and the beautiful market town of Alresford. The property itself is a Grade II Listed period cottage of great charm situated in the heart of historic Chawton and was once occupied by workers for the Austen family. The cottage is full of character with fireplaces and brick floors, leaded light windows, latch doors and beautiful period beams. The accommodation has a comfortable and homely feel and is tastefully decorated. The garden is delightful, with a pergola and seating area and the cottage has beautiful views over the rolling Chawton countryside. 2025 is the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth and Malthouse Cottage is the perfect place to celebrate this or to just enjoy a weekend away in a charming cottage in a truly picturesque Hampshire village.
