East Allington is a small but lively village served by The Fortescue Arms pub, with its lovely cottage garden in the summer and welcoming open fires in the winter. It was in the village church, in 1943, that the local people of East Allington and the surrounding area were told they were to be evacuated. The evacuation involved around 3000 people including entire farmsteads and all their animals. At the time people were kept in the dark about why, however it was because the nearby beach at Slapton Sands had been chosen by the War Office as a site for the troops to rehearse the D-Day landings. This was known as “Exercise Tiger” and sadly in a tragic twist, the rehearsing troops came under a surprise attack which resulted in the loss of 749 American soldiers in a single night.
The village is just 3 miles from the pretty market town of Kingsbridge, set at the head of the Kingsbridge/Salcombe estuary. The town has an array of shops, pubs, cafés, a cinema plus two supermarkets, so it’s the perfect place for stocking up on groceries, gifts and treats.
There’s also a choice of nearby beaches, including the 3 mile long, Slapton Sands at Torcross, the picturesque Blackpool Sands and the popular surf spots of Bigbury-on-Sea and Bantham. It’s also worth taking a drive along the dramatic coastal road from Torcross to the historic naval town of Dartmouth, or spending the day in nearby Totnes to experience its regular food and flea markets.
