Make the ten-minute walk to Waterhead to enjoy a cruise on the beautiful Lake Windermere or hire your own boat to explore the lake’s secluded bays and dramatic islands. In the opposite direction, you’ll find Ambleside’s bustling town centre where you can browse the shops, enjoy a meal at one of the excellent restaurants, or indulge in an afternoon treat at a café or tearoom before continuing your exploring. From Ambleside, follow the river up to the amazing Stock Ghyll Force, a 70-foot waterfall with a fantastic viewing bridge, continuing for a more energetic ramble up Wansfell Pike for more breath-taking views. The lovely Stagshaw Garden is worth a visit for its beautiful woodland garden with walking paths through the trees, shrubs and flowers, whilst some amazing history is to be discovered at Ambleside Roman Fort, with ruins dating back to the 2nd century. The Lakes cruises can be caught from Waterhead, taking you to all the popular lakes destinations like Bowness-on-Windermere, Windermere and Lakeside, with a host of attractions scattered throughout each place.
