Slapton is a small quaint village just a stone's throw from the outstandingly beautiful stretch of coastline at Slapton Sands, from where you can enjoy sweeping sea views across Start Bay, from the mouth of the river Dart in the north across to the craggy cliffs that curve round to Start Point Lighthouse in the south.
Slapton village is a short stroll from Slapton Sands beach, a 6km stretch of pebble beach, fronted by Start Bay and backed by the stunning Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve – a large freshwater lake separated from the sea by a narrow strip of land, and home to many species of wildlife including otters, eels, dormice and a huge number of birds and insects.
Slapton village itself boasts two pubs, The Tower Inn which is renowned for its excellent food, and The Queen's Arms, which has a pretty garden providing the perfect spot for a refreshing beer, whilst a shop/Post Office, café and more pub/restaurants can be found at nearby Torcross. There are also many wonderful walks in the area – through unspoilt countryside, around the Slapton Ley, and along the spectacular South West Coast Path.
Slightly further along the coastal road towards Dartmouth, you'll find Blackpool Sands, one of the most popular beaches in Devon. Here, the golden sand and shingle beach, green pines cliffs, and turquoise waters conspire to exude an almost Mediterranean feel. This beautiful, family-friendly beach is great for windsurfing, paddle boarding and canoeing, and when hunger strikes, the beach-side Venus Café is a great place to refuel with a view.
The lively market town of Kingsbride is just 7 miles away and offers a good choice of independent shops, cafés and pubs, as well as two supermarkets for stocking up on essentials.
A holiday cottage in Slapton offers a good base for enjoying the breath-taking beauty of this special corner of South Devon.
