Holiday cottages in South West England
South West England is one of nine official regions of England. It is the largest such region in area, covering 9,200 square miles and comprising Gloucestershire, Bristol, Wiltshire, Somerset, Dorset, Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Five million people live in South West England.
The region includes the area often known as the West Country and much of the ancient kingdom of Wessex. The size of the region is shown by the fact that the northern part of Gloucestershire, near Chipping Campden, is as close to the Scottish border as it is to the tip of Cornwall. The largest city is Bristol. Other major urban centres include Plymouth, Swindon, Gloucester, Exeter, Bath, and the South East Dorset conurbation of Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch.
All counties either include at least one unitary authority or are unitary authorities themselves, as is the case with Cornwall and the Unitary Authority of Bristol. The region has 8 cities: Salisbury, Bath, Wells, Bristol, Gloucester, Exeter, Plymouth and Truro. It includes two National Parks – Dartmoor and Exmoor – and four World Heritage Sites, including Stonehenge and the Jurassic Coast. The holiday versatility of South West England is a wonderful testimony to the UK as a great destination. The region is unique in its breathtaking coastline and beauty, steeped in ancient, mysterious legend and tradition, yet offering modern comforts over a range of short-break holiday cottages.
If activity inspires you, there are plenty that harness that tricky combination of fun, relaxation and adventure for everyone from the thrill-seeking surfers at Woolacombe and Newquay, to the history-lovers clambering amongst legendary Cornish coves, once the holds and hideaways of smugglers. Perhaps you prefer the uncompromising ruggedness of Dorset’s Jurassic coast, contrasted with energetic club nights in the seaside towns of Bournemouth, Poole and Torquay. Enjoy the regency architecture of Bath, revel in the naval histories of Bristol, Plymouth and Falmouth and catch your breakfast in fishing villages like Mevagissey.
Cross misty Dartmoor, on to marvel at the futuristic brilliance of the Eden Centre. From Somerset’s Cheddar Gorge and Glastonbury, through the Saxon city of Exeter and down to the family-fun venues of Exmouth and Dawlish, a short break cottage holiday awaits you as a snug bolthole to relax, rejuvenate, and quickly rekindle your passion for life. Limited only by your imagination and time, you’ll want many happy returns.
